Weston Launches Joint 3A Working Group With July 14 Compliance Deadline Approaching

WESTON — May 8, 2025 — Weston forms a joint Select Board-Planning Board working group to craft a new MBTA 3A compliance plan. Select Board Chair Lisa Revers convened the inaugural meeting of the eight-member MBTA 3A Communities Working Group on May 8, established after a prior plan was rejected at December town meeting by a vote of 195 in favor to 544 opposed — far short of the required two-thirds majority. The group is targeting a compliant plan with between 300 and 400 likely-buildable units, against a state minimum of 750 zoned units, by leaning on a "long-term zoning" strategy that overlays 3A districts onto properties such as Maplewood Assisted Living and the Whitman Tennis Center where actual redevelopment is considered highly unlikely. Planning Board Chair Leslie Glynn and member Al Adelot are among those taking on direct outreach to property owners including Boston Properties and the Merriam Village board. The town's lawsuit challenging the law as an unfunded mandate was set for a court hearing on May 9, one day after the meeting, with the state's July 14 compliance deadline still in effect.
