Kendal Common committee trims modernist survey list to 105 properties

WESTON — March 2, 2023 — Kendal Common committee trims modernist survey to the state-mandated 105-property cap. At its March 2 meeting, the Local Historic District Study Committee took consultant Stacy's draft list of 108 properties down by removing six post-1973 or out-of-period houses — including a 1997 E. Bernard Johnson-designed home at 8 Bay State Road, a 1976 property at 171 Wellesley Street, and a 2005 house — and by merging two separate Weston High School entries at 444 Wellesley Street into one. Members restored a Ned Goodell house on Summer Street and a 1950s modernist addition to the Case House, calling both stronger examples than several listings. The committee debated whether to label the survey "modern," "modernist," or "mid-century modern" and will put the question to Stacy at the March 23 meeting. Members also agreed any district must clear "neighborhood support" and a town meeting vote.
