Kendal Common committee will draft historic district proposal before February neighborhood meeting

WESTON -- January 9, 2025, Kendal Common study committee sets four-week sprint to produce first concrete historic district proposal. The Weston committee agreed Jan. 9 to bring a draft bylaw outline and design guidelines to the Kendal Common neighborhood's annual meeting around Feb. 5. Member Alicia Primer will adapt material from Weston's 1993 Crescent Street Historic District bylaw, while architect David Fixler and Historical Commission member Henry Stone will draft guidelines focused on the modernist neighborhood's biggest technical issue: replacement windows that can cost twice as much in steel as in premium wood. Neighborhood representative Rick Brotman, reporting that two architects have bought and gutted a prominent corner house, partly for lead paint abatement, said the committee must give residents something to react to: "We've got to make it more real." He also said he would not press a proposal that lacks neighborhood backing. The committee next meets Jan. 23.
