Weston Historical Commission Approves Meadowbrook Road Addition, Advances Water Tower Hearing

WESTON — May 20, 2019 — Weston Historical Commission cleared additions to a 1922 Case Williams district cottage, advanced a water tower demolition question to a June 17 public hearing, and backed a granite entrance slab for the old library — all at a lengthy May 20 meeting. Co-Chair Phyllis Halpern presided as the commission voted unanimously to find proposed additions at 300 Meadowbrook Road not detrimental, preserving a historic worker's cottage that had attracted demolition interest from developers before the Murphy family purchased it. At 2 Laxfield Road, the commission declared an estate water tower — one of very few surviving in Weston — significant, triggering a formal public hearing. The old library granite slab dispute, which has generated at least 25 meetings by one member's count, ended with the commission voting to proceed with granite at a two-percent-or-less slope contingent on a shop drawing reviewed by all parties, including the state Barriers Board and Massachusetts Architectural Access Board; library director Cecily noted $127,000 has been raised from outside sources toward the project, with a September opening now targeted.
