Select Board cancels fall special town meeting, approves 2 percent non-union raise

WESTON — October 6, 2020 — Weston Select Board scraps fall special town meeting and locks in 2 percent non-union raise. Town finance staff told the three-member board on Oct. 6 that the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, through Andrew Nelson, will accept a letter signed by the chair, finance director and Recreation Director Chris Fitzgerald committing to constrain spending — eliminating any need for a December rate-setting fix at town meeting. Two Community Preservation Committee articles, a Brook School Apartments expansion and a pool expansion, will wait until May. The board voted 3-0 to set FY21 non-union compensation at a 2 percent COLA retroactive to July 1, 2020, after HR noted four of five union units settled at 2.25 percent and warned that "non-union folks can easily become union folks" if treated too differently. Members also declined to set 2021 caucus, election and annual town meeting dates, calling it a year "to break with tradition."
