School Committee authorizes outside bus maintenance procurement

Weston School Committee backs emergency bus maintenance contract over safety concerns. In action at its August 4 retreat, the Committee unanimously authorized Superintendent Dr. Karen Zaleski to initiate competitive procurement for transportation maintenance following recent school bus incidents (highway breakdown, brake failure) caused by vacant town mechanic positions.
The Committee also unanimously approved FY2028 budget guidelines with level-service increases exceeding 3.5 percent, identifying special education costs and staffing as primary drivers. The Committee declined to pursue athletic and club fees without further equity study but directed Athletics to gather true participation cost data. The Committee amended the building project charter and expressed support for a feasibility study before fall Special Town Meeting.
