Weston Unified Planning Committee Workshopped Historic, Traffic, and Economic Issues

WESTON — September 15, 2025 — Weston's Unified Planning Committee workshopped historic preservation, circulation, and economic development at a September 15 hybrid session, identifying key issues for the town's emerging 20-year unified plan. Chair Danielle Black of the Council on Aging presided, with consultant Jill Slankes of the Barrett Planning Group leading the three-topic session. Historic preservation planner Jen Doherty told the committee that Weston's Historical Commission lacks a community-wide preservation plan despite having strong tools in place, citing Sudbury and Concord as regional models. On circulation, NICHE consultant Maddie Augustine flagged high vehicle volumes, fragmented pedestrian and bicycle routes, and a persistent last-mile problem connecting residents to Kendall Green commuter rail station; Melanie Larson proposed codifying a rail trail-to-Kendall Green bicycle commuting corridor in the plan. Economic development discussion centered on what Robert Scott called "the most important issue facing Weston" — a tax base that is roughly 95 percent residential — and a sharp debate over whether the town's capital borrowing plans threaten its Aaa bond rating, with the town manager pushing back firmly on that framing. The committee's next remote meeting is set for October 6.
