Weston Traffic Committee Votes to Strip Two Route 30 Signals From Reconstruction Design

WESTON — June 14, 2023 — Weston's Traffic and Sidewalk Committee voted to remove proposed signals from two Route 30 intersections and advance a long-delayed pedestrian path. Meeting June 14, the committee voted 3-0 to direct the town's Route 30 design consultant to drop traffic signals at Winter Street and Oak Street from the 3.7-mile reconstruction project — currently at 25 percent design — in favor of non-signalized improvements such as sight-line clearing, tightened intersection geometry, and rectangular rapid flashing beacons for pedestrians. The committee also voted unanimously to advance Alternative 2A, a single consolidated traffic signal at Highland Street and Route 20, as the preferred long-term fix for that intersection, following more than a year of consultant analysis. A third unanimous vote directed town engineer Jason to complete final design and a construction cost estimate for the Ash Street pedestrian walkway — estimated at roughly $400,000 in its failed 2021 iteration but expected to cost more now — in time to apply for Community Preservation Act funding at the fall 2023 Town Meeting.
