Weston Select Board advances fire station rebuild plans, governance study committee
WESTON — June 5, 2023 — Weston Select Board backs fire station overhaul concepts and adopts governance study charter. At the June 5 meeting, the three-member board heard conceptual redesign plans from Jeffrey Mackle of Tecton Architects for both the 1914-era Center Street station and the 1967 South Avenue station, with the board confirming its preference for keeping administrative offices and primary response downtown while relocating training and secondary response to South Avenue. Mackle said the designs address documented health, safety, and capacity shortfalls and aim for net-zero performance at South Avenue, with a design-funding request targeted for fall 2023 Town Meeting and construction funding to follow separately. The board voted 3-0 to adopt the charter for a Town Governance Study Committee — drafted by Member Rebecca J. Mercuri — which will examine Weston's governance structure and report in time for the May 2025 Town Meeting, setting up a public process around a pending citizens petition to expand the Select Board from three to five members. The board also voted 3-0 to authorize participation in the Mass Development PACE financing program for the Great Lens Riverside Project and 3-0 to approve Park Road design changes recommended by the Traffic and Sidewalk Committee.
