Weston Historical Commission votes three properties significant, schedules April hearing on child care conversion

WESTON -- March 6, 2019, Weston Historical Commission advances child care conversion of 1827 Federal house after finding three properties significant. The commission voted unanimously to find 863 Boston Post Road, the Alpheus Bigelow Jr. House, historically significant and scheduled a public hearing for April 1, where it will decide whether to impose a demolition delay on the property proposed for conversion into a 153-student Artisan Child Care Center. Co-Chair Phyllis Halpern praised architect Philip Paresco and applicant Gus Maragis for a "sensitive approach," and members responded favorably to plans to harvest and reinstall original windows and restore the louvered carriage house facade with a glass wall set behind it. The disposition of an adjacent early 19th-century law office at 3 Applecrest, reportedly offered to the town as a donation, remains unresolved, with Halpern calling for a separate meeting with town staff and property owners to advance the question. The commission also voted 36 Church Street and 37 Silver Hill Road significant, scheduling a March 14 site visit to the Church Street property over the applicant's argument that its Greek Revival character has been lost to alterations.
