Weston Historical Commission advances two house reviews to June 28 hearing

WESTON -- May 31, 2022, Weston Historical Commission votes to continue two demolition-delay cases and spends $13,500 on signs and a historical exhibit. At the May 31 remote meeting, the commission continued the hearing for 109 Highland Street to June 28 while awaiting a response from the applicant, and voted 5-0 to arrange a site visit to 34 Chestnut Street, a heavily modified 1931 multi-family home tied to blacksmith Oliver Patrick Quinn, before ruling on its significance. For 68 Summer Street, a 1925 scenic-road cottage, the commission first declared the house historically significant, then voted 5-0 to send a proposed two-story rear addition by architect Joseph Fournier to a June 28 public hearing. A George Washington Memorial Highway plaque project was tabled after consultant Yano Stone reported the total cost had risen to $8,500, up from roughly $4,200, due to rising bronze prices linked to the war in Ukraine. The commission approved $10,000 for a Weston Historical Society exhibit at the Jonas Stone Tavern site, a separate vote authorizing up to $3,500 from the general operating fund toward the same exhibit pending staff confirmation, and up to $1,000 for a supplemental Burgoyne Elm sign strip, with Co-Chair Phyllis Halpern and member Ford Curran authorized to execute it before fiscal year end.
