Historical Commission backs Eagle Scout's Merriam Barn restoration project

WESTON — October 19, 2021 — Weston Historical Commission backs Eagle Scout's Merriam Barn project and funds interpretive sign. The commission voted 7-0 on Oct. 19 to serve as project beneficiary for scout Holden's plan to cut a 100-foot trail exposing the stone foundations of the 1876 Merriam Barn, which burned in October 1926, and 7-0 to fund a marker not to exceed $500. Member Henry S. Stone, Jr. noted the commission's recent Burgoyne Elm sign cost roughly $155 not counting black locust posts. The commission also advanced a comprehensive renovation at 42 Conant Road — siding, windows, roof and porch — to a Nov. 16 public hearing, with members pressing the Bagnell brothers for two-over-one windows, one-by-six corner boards, and a site walk after selective siding removal. A replacement cedar fence at the preservation-restricted Hobbs-Tainter house at 88 North Avenue passed 6-0 with Member Steve Wagner recused.
