Historical Commission approves three projects, backs Norumbega Tower variance

WESTON — April 9, 2024 — Weston Historical Commission backs Norumbega Tower repair and three more preservation projects. The commission voted 5-0 to send a memo of support for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation's plan to repoint, restore and re-gate the 1889 stone tower, accepting DCR's argument that a lift or elevator "would destroy" its integrity. Jeffrey Harris of DCR's Office of Cultural Resources outlined alternative-access measures including a code-compliant interior handrail running the full height of the spiral stair and a new interpretive panel with photographs of the view from the top. The commission also approved Pella Architect Series wood replacement windows at the 1764 Spring-Elliston House at 263 South Ave., subject to signoff by the Weston Forest and Trail Association, and unanimously approved LDA Architects' Marvin Signature Ultimate plan to convert the north end of an 1896 barn at 102 Wellesley St. into a two-bedroom accessory apartment for Sharmila Ray and Alok Chakravarty's family. A hearing on a federal-style addition at 415 North Ave. was continued to May 14 for revised drawings.
