Weston's Zoning Board of Appeals approved a permanent monument sign for the Riverside Labs office campus and extended a Fire Department communications tower variance to 2028. Chair Stephen J. Larocque led the 3-0 roll call votes, joined by member Wendy Kaplan Amour and Associate Member Laura Mintz.
The sign case, brought by Teri MacEachern on behalf of Weston Fee Owner, LLC, was the board's first under Massachusetts' new "practical difficulty" variance standard, replacing "substantial hardship." Attorney Jim Ward argued the sign, which exceeds size limits by roughly 20 square feet, could not be relocated without cutting trees and losing visibility. Mintz said she had "never seen this amenity cafe vendor" on a monument sign in her 30 years in commercial real estate. Separately, Fire Chief Woodside won a extension, to November 7, 2028, for a communications tower variance at 150 Highland Street pending the town's water tank replacement project.
