Weston traffic panel votes to remove Town Center sign and parking space

WESTON — November 20, 2024 — Weston traffic committee clears Town Center sign and parking changes, presses Route 117 redesign. The Traffic and Sidewalk Committee voted unanimously Nov. 20 to recommend the Select Board permanently remove a bagged pedestrian-crossing sign on the westbound Boston Post Road approach to the four-way stop, and eliminate a parking space east of Center Street that blocks crosswalk and Center Street sight lines. The panel also pushed back on Howard Stein Hudson's revised Route 117/Merriam/Lincoln concept, with member Linda Nelson warning that a proposed grooved-concrete truck apron would catch cyclists' wheels and "set the town up for liability." Chair Jay Doyle questioned the use of sharrows and a rectangular rapid flashing beacon on the 40 mph road. Public Works engineer Jason said the project needs a May Town Meeting warrant article to fund design. Boston Post Road speed-board data showed outliers as high as 56 mph in a 30 mph zone.
