Weston Traffic Committee to Weigh Norumbega Road Parking Fix for Care Workers

WESTON — October 19, 2022 — Weston's Traffic and Sidewalk Committee heard urgent testimony about parking and pedestrian safety on Norumbega Road, where DCR enforcement this summer cut off informal on-street parking used by caregivers and visitors at Maplewood at Weston senior living facility. A facility representative identified as Bernardo told the committee that "the most we need at any given time, it's probably five spots," while resident Paul Wood and family members described workers walking in darkness along a busy, unlit road. Fire department officials opposed a proposed one-way conversion, noting that 10 percent of annual emergency calls go to the two buildings on that road, and Chair Jay Doyle said the committee is "not leaning toward" the one-way option. The panel plans to bring a formal recommendation to the Select Board as early as its November 16 meeting, pending coordination with DCR and Weston DPW. The committee also scheduled consultant briefings on the Route 20 at Wellesley Street and Route 20 at Highland Street intersection projects for November 16, with the Ash Street sidewalk project deferred to December.
