Weston Traffic and Sidewalk Committee approves nine Route 30 design changes

WESTON — January 6, 2025 — Weston Traffic and Sidewalk Committee endorses nine Route 30 design changes in 5-0 vote. The committee, chaired by Jay Doyle, recommended removing proposed traffic signals at Winter Street and Oak Street, repositioning crosswalks with pedestrian refuge islands at Pine, Highland and Oak streets, and shifting the shared-use path closer to the Massachusetts Turnpike east of 334 South Ave. to reduce tree and ledge impacts. The changes, summarized in a Nov. 20 memo from Town Engineer Jason Lavoie, came out of fall 2024 public meetings and will guide designer Howard Stein Hudson from 25 percent to 75 percent design. Resident Rebecca McCurry, who with her husband Lou submitted an 18-point comment letter, urged the town to route the path along the MWRA aqueduct instead; Doyle said the alternative was "enticing and worth pursuing" but would likely disqualify the project from MassDOT funding. A resident identified as Andy said the tightened intersection geometry made him feel he had "wasted four hours of my life" on public meetings. The committee rescheduled its next meeting to Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
