Weston School Committee adopts new alternative transportation rules for fall

WESTON — June 16, 2025 — Weston School Committee reaches consensus on new alternative bus transportation rules and approves a 4 percent superintendent pay raise. The committee, meeting June 16 at Case House with Chair Daina Selvig presiding, agreed on what members called "Option 3.5" — a 24-hour advance notice requirement for alternative bus stops on regular school days, a limit of two additional riders per household per stop, a 72-hour notice window on the district's roughly 11 annual half days, and a mandatory liability waiver — after Assistant Superintendent Dr. Neil Trehan presented data showing that on a May 7 half day, five students boarded buses without any prior notification and one bus ran over capacity at 73 students. "The law sets a floor, not a ceiling," said parent and attorney Adam King in public comment, urging the committee to reject broad restrictions and instead adopt narrowly tailored solutions. The committee also unanimously approved a 4 percent total compensation increase for Superintendent Dr. Kimo Zaleski — the first merit raise granted to a Weston superintendent in at least a decade — comprising a required 2.5 percent contractual increase plus a 1.5 percent discretionary merit component. WeFC separately reported raising $247,680 in a playground fundraiser that had a $110,000 goal, with 149 donors contributing to upgrades at Country and Woodland elementary schools.
