Weston School Committee defers food allergy policy vote, seeks legal guidance on consultant

WESTON — June 2, 2025 — Weston School Committee defers food allergy policy vote and seeks legal guidance on a former member's possible consulting role. At the June 2 meeting held at the Case House, the five-member board heard a full presentation from Superintendent Casey Zalewski on the district's two-year action plan, covering literacy curriculum rollout, high-quality instructional materials in math, PBIS implementation, and the launch of a multi-year strategic planning effort aimed at producing a new district mission, vision, and core values by June 2026. Chair Daina Selvig urged Zalewski to treat strategic planning as her "central focus" and delegate more operational oversight to building leaders. The board deferred a final vote on updated food allergy and food service policies — described by food allergy specialist Jamie Gaynor as "many years in the making" — to the June 16 meeting so two new members could review the materials fully. The committee also directed school counsel to examine whether engaging former member Jeff Lucas as a communications consultant would conflict with Massachusetts General Law or district policy before the June 16 session. The meeting closed with a unanimous five-to-zero roll-call vote to enter executive session on collective bargaining strategy with the Weston Educators Association.
