Weston School Committee Unanimously Backs Climate Grant Letter in 5-0 Vote

WESTON — July 10, 2025 — Weston School Committee unanimously authorized a letter supporting the town's climate leaders grant application, clearing the last required step for access to state energy grants of up to $1 million per project. The 5-0 vote, taken at a special July 10 morning meeting, endorses both a municipal decarbonization roadmap and a zero emission vehicle policy previously approved by the Select Board. Chair Daina Selvig and fellow members Kenneth Newberg, Tiao Xie, Jane Li, and Stephen Dietz all voted in favor after town officials confirmed the documents carry no immediate budget obligations and that school buses are explicitly exempt from the ZEV policy. The town's first opportunity to apply for climate leaders project funding is February 2026, when a new facilities director is expected to be in place; Weston currently receives grants capped at $200,000 under the standard Green Communities program, against which it can no longer reliably compete given the size of the applicant pool.
