Weston fire station group commissions $72,000 conceptual design for two-site plan

WESTON — October 16, 2024 — Weston fire station group commissions conceptual designs to test two-site strategy against prior plan. The Fire Station Working Group directed Tecton Architects to prepare conceptual floor plans, elevations and cost estimates for both a new roughly 23,000-square-foot southern superstation and a renovation of the existing Center station, work pegged at about $72,000, plus roughly $16,000 in hazmat surveys at the Center and South stations through Foster & O'Neill. Both proposals go to the Permanent Building Committee. Chair Tom Palmer said the Oct. 8 Select Board presentation produced no pushback on the four candidate sites — middle school, high school, St. Peter's and Linwood Cemetery — but that with a roughly $30 million water tanks article and the MBTA 3A zoning vote both on the Dec. 3 Special Town Meeting warrant, "this is shaping up to be one of the spicier town meetings that we've had in a while." Member Laurie Bent reported that Linwood's 1873 deed dedicates the parcel to cemetery use in perpetuity and that the cemetery superintendent now expects the buffer zone to be needed for a columbarium. Tecton's Jeff Sauser said estimates would be back by the end of January.
