Weston CPC Unanimously Backs $3.3 Million Pool Renovation for September Vote

WESTON — July 19, 2022 — Weston's Community Preservation Committee voted unanimously to advance three projects totaling up to $3.394 million to the September 13 special town meeting. The committee backed a $3.3 million Memorial Pool renovation — the facility's first capital investment since 1993 — an $85,000 design grant for six new pickleball courts at Birchard Park, and up to $9,000 for a historic marker survey at South Burial Ground on South Avenue. The pool request drew sharp questioning over a mid-week cost increase driven by overlapping construction contingencies, with designer Tom Scarlatta acknowledging that $1,400-per-square-foot pricing for the entry building was "personally ridiculous" but in line with current market bids. Because the pool request exceeds $2 million, it would be bonded and would require a two-thirds supermajority at town meeting; bids are due August 17, and the final warrant figure could be lower. The pickleball courts, if designed this fall, would seek approximately $806,000 in construction funding at the May 2023 annual town meeting.
