Weston committee reviews Route 30 shared-use path through segment two

WESTON — October 16, 2024 — Weston committee reviews Route 30 segment-two design as residents challenge congestion impacts. Howard Stein Hudson traffic lead Michaela Siegert and project manager Bridget Myers walked the Traffic and Sidewalk Committee through a 10-foot shared-use path on the south side, 11-foot travel lanes, a pedestrian hybrid beacon doubling as the Ash Street fire signal, and a rectangular rapid flashing beacon with raised crosswalk at Oak Street. Siegert cited FHWA data that pedestrian refuge islands cut pedestrian crash rates 32 percent. Chair Jay Doyle confirmed posted speed limits are not changing; Weston Police Capt. Kelly said "our violent crashes are all speed-related," nearly all outside peak hours. Resident Andy Flitter said the Ash Street tightening "is just going to make it worse" at rush hour; member Clinton Nelson asked the team to reconsider an Oak Street signal dropped from the 25 percent design, saying he is "terrified" of an uncontrolled crossing at 4,000 vehicles per day. Construction funding is targeted for fiscal 2027.
