Weston committee airs designs for Route 20 signal and 200-unit South Avenue 40B

WESTON — April 24, 2019 — Weston Traffic and Sidewalk Committee airs Route 20 redesign and 200-unit 40B in same night. VHB consultants Tim McIntosh and Keith Winters presented the preferred signalized design for Route 20 at Wellesley Street, citing a November 2018 road safety audit that found 59 crashes over three years — 53 percent angle collisions — and laid out a four-phase signal with protected westbound lefts, an exclusive pedestrian phase and a realigned Windsor Way. Steve Daso of The Hanover Company then presented a 200-unit 40B at 510, 518 and 540 South Ave. with 326 parking spaces, average rents near $3,200 and preliminary peak-hour trip counts of 99 morning and 121 evening against a Route 30 daily volume of 16,500. Resident Dave Varela of 465 South Ave. challenged the figures, saying he didn't see "how a project can get this far along" without peer-reviewed data. Town Engineer Steve Fogg also reported an $18,000–$24,000 consultant proposal for the Merriam Street/Route 117 intersection, where the crash rate runs roughly 75 percent above the MassDOT District 6 average.
