Weston Traffic Committee Hears Bike-Ped Plan, Defers Action on Signs and Route 30

WESTON — June 29, 2026 — Weston's Traffic and Sidewalk Committee reviewed a near-final town-wide Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan and deferred action on several signage items at its June 29 meeting. Beta consultants Jeff Maxtutus and Anna Sangree presented a draft plan containing more than 40 scored infrastructure projects, with Cases Corner and two Route 20 intersections topping the prioritized list; the ranking uses a six-category system weighted heavily toward safety, drawing on crash data from 2018 to 2025. The committee also discussed but did not vote on installing 30 state-provided bicycle safe-passing signs held in storage for more than a year, or adding curve-warning signage at a North Avenue bend with nine reported crashes in five years, with member Richard Flint urging the body to establish criteria before acting on individual locations. Resident Randy Castle challenged a published editorial advocating the MWRA aqueduct as a bicycle route, and Town Engineer Jason Lavoie confirmed MWRA has flatly refused any public access to the active aqueduct, requiring a six-to-eight-foot fence even alongside the Route 30 path. The committee set no deadline for closing public comment on the Route 30 pre-75 design, citing a public meeting the following evening and an expected change in membership after the Select Board fills two vacancies at its July 14 meeting.
