Weston School Committee votes 3-2 to adopt bell-to-bell cell phone policy

WESTON — April 28, 2025 — Weston School Committee adopted a bell-to-bell personal device policy in a 3-2 vote, with full high school implementation deferred to fall 2026. The committee had unanimous agreement on restricting phones bell-to-bell through grade eight, but the high school vote was closer, with outgoing member Adam Resnick voting no and saying "it's how we get there as a community that is really important" and that teachers risk becoming enforcers without adequate buy-in. High school principal Sue Barrese, who also did not favor the timeline, flagged budget implications including iPad carts and digital cameras needed to replace student-device-dependent instruction, costs she said must be planned for in the FY27 budget. The committee also unanimously affirmed Superintendent Dr. Zaleskey's proficient evaluation rating and approved a contract for new elementary playgrounds at all four elementary sites, with construction expected to begin immediately after the school year ends.
