Weston School Committee Reorganizes, Sets Sights on Permanent Superintendent Search

WESTON — May 9, 2023 — Weston School Committee reorganizes and eyes permanent superintendent search after 92 percent budget vote. The committee re-elected its incumbent chair, identified in the meeting as Ken, and elected Maya as vice chair at the May 9 reorganization meeting, with Derek Joyce re-appointed as secretary; new member Adam, a former educator and 13-year Weston resident, was seated and oriented. The chair cited the prior evening's Annual Town Meeting result — 92 percent in favor of the school budget — as evidence the district had "broke that pattern of continuous decline." Members spent the bulk of the meeting assigning subcommittee roles for the coming year and flagged the permanent superintendent search as the committee's most consequential near-term task, with a search consultant proposal expected at the June 5 meeting. Four grants covering elementary classroom libraries, band instruments, meeting-room lighting, and a middle school strength program were approved on the consent agenda, and the committee moved to executive session on collective bargaining strategy at the close.
