Weston School Committee receives world languages, engineering studies, approves new coordinator role

WESTON — June 3, 2024 — Weston School Committee receives world languages and engineering reviews. World Languages Director Kathy Baker reported that 23 percent of Weston's class of 2024 earned the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy — compared to 14 percent in Wayland, 16 percent in Newton and 2 percent in Lincoln-Sudbury — as she presented a six-section self-study recommending five-day-a-week middle school instruction and an elementary immersion program backed by 67 percent of surveyed parents. Science Department Head Steve Verbeyst and Assistant Superintendent Kimo Carter unveiled six engineering recommendations spanning K-12, including a new high school robotics elective and integration of design challenges across content areas. Member Kenneth Newberg called the long-range planning "really nice and refreshing." The committee unanimously approved a restructured academic coordinator position with a $70,000–$85,000 salary range, combining two TEC program slots.
