Weston School Committee adopts one-year coursework graduation standard, advances $49.4 million budget

WESTON — February 24, 2025 — Weston School Committee sets coursework graduation standard and forwards a $49.4 million budget. The committee voted unanimously to adopt Superintendent Karen Tregan's one-year competency determination — passing grades in 10th-grade English, geometry and a lab science — after Question 2 barred MCAS-based standards. Member Kenneth Newberg pushed back, warning of "an inherent conflict of interest" when "the practitioners judge whether they successfully practiced," and noted Weston backed keeping MCAS by the commonwealth's widest margin. The committee will revisit in August. Tregan's fiscal 2026 budget totals $49,410,720, a 3.9 percent increase, after Director of Finance Buck Creel found $61,400 in additional cuts to absorb $345,000 for added sixth- and seventh-grade sections and a third elementary curriculum coordinator. The DEI coordinator role was eliminated. Chair Daina Selvig announced she will not seek re-election.
