Weston governance committee sets work plan aimed at 2025 Town Meeting

WESTON — February 15, 2024 — Weston governance committee maps a year of study before 2025 Town Meeting. The Town Governance Study Committee held a wide-ranging Feb. 15 discussion and reviewed more than a dozen peer-community studies provided by Town Counsel Lauren Goldberg, with Chair Harvey Boshart agreeing to circulate a draft issue list covering select-board size, term limits, appointed-versus-elected positions and committee overlap. Member Michael Harrity said the government is not broken but the "aging volunteer group" is a structural risk. Member Kara Fleming argued the town must "actively educate and engage the community" and that posting to a website does not qualify. Member Glenn Cross cited a median resident age of 46, up from 42 in 2010. Town Moderator Rip Hastings noted Natick concluded its town meeting "needs to be replaced," while Concord moved to a five-member select board and Amherst to a 13-member town council. The committee will next meet Feb. 29 at 5 p.m.
