Weston Finance Committee backs $3.3M pool renovation, splits on pickleball courts

WESTON — August 4, 2022 — Weston Finance Committee unanimously backs $3.3 million pool renovation, splits on pickleball design funds. The committee voted 8-0 Thursday to support a Community Preservation Committee appropriation for Memorial Pool renovations — the facility's first capital investment since 1993 — and also unanimously backed a companion article allowing a $75,000 retained-earnings transfer for pool furniture and non-CPC-eligible amenities. The panel voted 5-3 to support an $85,000 CPC design appropriation for six pickleball courts at Burchard Park, over objections from member John Salley, who called the project "a gigantic boondoggle" and noted the town had already voted 303-230 against a prior version at May town meeting. A motion to support a school special education stabilization reserve fund — which would deposit roughly $75,000 annually from budget surpluses to cover unexpected out-of-district placements averaging $170,000 per student — ended in a 4-4 tie, leaving no committee position heading into the September 13 special town meeting.
