Weston Committee Endorses New Speed Sign Near Waltham Line After Accident
WESTON — December 20, 2023 — Weston's Traffic and Sidewalk Committee voted 3-0 to endorse a new speed-limit sign on the northbound approach of River Road near the Waltham town line, where a recent bus accident prompted outreach from Waltham's own safety committee. Chair Jay Doyle noted that while Weston posts a 25 mph limit, no sign is visible to drivers heading toward Waltham along the entire stretch between Route 95 and the town line — a gap that coincides with a downhill approach. Member Linda Nelson, who attended Waltham's safety committee meeting in early December, said Waltham is also exploring dropping its section from 35 mph to 25 mph and planned to contact Weston Town Engineer Jason directly about coordinated signage. The committee also heard that MassDOT is reviewing Weston's request to fold a 400-foot sidewalk extension into the Route 20 Wellesley Street TIP project, a move that would shift construction costs to the state, pending Planning Board and Select Board approvals expected in January.
