Finance Committee builds question framework before FY22 department budget hearings

WESTON — January 7, 2021 — Weston Finance Committee preps department-by-department questions ahead of FY22 budget hearings. The committee on Jan. 7 worked through DPW, police, fire, library, recreation, and schools, with members urging a shift from "level service" toward needs-based questioning. Chair Lisa reported the Public Employee Committee health-benefits agreement is signed and finalized; Town Manager Leon estimated savings of roughly $1.2 million over three years, with more than $400,000 in year three. Leon also said state revenues are running about 9 percent above benchmark, with Chapter 70 aid likely at least level-funded. Member John Sally argued department heads "ought to know anything that we could possibly ask" without needing follow-up meetings. CARES Act funds are now confirmed available into FY22 to absorb COVID expenses, allowing town-side budgets to be built for "business as usual."
