Weston School Committee Elects Newberg Chair, Approves Bus Driver Contract
WESTON — May 12, 2022 — Weston School Committee elects new chair and ratifies three-year bus driver contract on opening night. Kenneth Newberg, a construction attorney, was unanimously elected chair at the May 12 reorganization meeting, with Allison Mazzula named vice chair. The committee voted 5-0 to approve a successor collective bargaining agreement with the district's bus drivers covering July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2025, at a five and three-quarters percent cost-of-living adjustment over three years — the fourth of six bargaining units to settle at that rate. Pay for drivers on METCO routes was also increased. Newberg framed the in-house contract as protection against the outside-vendor market, noting peer districts have reported single-bid situations and cost jumps of eight percent or more. The committee also received an internal athletics program review from Director Mike McGrath covering the COVID years, with an external review charge discussion deferred to the May 23 meeting, when the committee will also vote on expanding the Weston Education Foundation board by five members.
