Weston School Committee Approves Tech Restructuring, Policy Updates at Fall Meeting

WESTON — September 9, 2024 — Weston School Committee voted unanimously to restructure its technology department and adopt a governance policy update package at its September 9 opening meeting of the school year. Chair Daina Selvig reported the district's fiscal 2023 audit returned no exceptions and that the high school tennis courts met their concrete-pour milestone on time. The committee approved a new district-wide technology specialist job description, converting four building-based positions into three year-round district-wide roles — a change expected to save roughly $40,000 annually while extending coverage to elementary buildings that lacked tech support at the start of the year. High School Principal Sue Barista outlined a voluntary NEASC accreditation process beginning in November, with a visiting committee expected in fall 2025. Superintendent Karen Zaleski announced a secondary scheduling committee will convene immediately, targeting a proposed new schedule by spring 2025 for fall 2026 implementation. Two parents, Beth Climber and Glenn King of 105 Cherrybrook Road, urged the committee during public comment to adopt a formal campus smartphone restriction policy and to include parent education as part of any plan.
