Weston Library Outlines Solo-Visit Rules for Kids 10 and Up
Off The Shelf - August · Meeting of August 17, 2026
Weston library spells out solo-visit rules and back-to-school reading picks. In an "Off The Shelf" segment on Weston Media Center, Weston Public Library's Allie Pongren said children age 10 and up may visit independently for the first time, with 10- and 11-year-olds allowed up to two hours unattended daily if they stay in the children's area and have a caregiver's phone number on hand. Kids under 10 need supervision, including from a babysitter at least 16 years old, and Pongren warned the library "can close unexpectedly" in winter weather, often mirroring school closures.
She rounded out the segment with age-graded reading picks, from "Wemberly Worried" and "Chrysanthemum" for new students to "No More Dead Dogs" and Leigh Bardugo's "Ninth House" for older readers, and flagged that fall program sign-ups have moved to a "kids and teens" tab on the library's newly redesigned website.
