Weston Historical Commission Approves Two Renovations, Advances Rand House Sale Planning

WESTON -- July 15, 2019, Weston Historical Commission approves two renovation certificates and advances planning for Rand House sale. The commission voted unanimously at its July 15 meeting to issue certificates of non-detriment for a reduced addition on Gowell Lane, scaled back to 69 percent of the existing house's 1,759 square feet, and for a third-bay garage and breezeway addition in the Lovelane historic area. Member Alfred Aydelott presented a conceptual addition plan for the town-owned Rand House at the Case Estate, outlining a roughly 5,300-square-foot buildable envelope intended to show prospective buyers what preservation restrictions would allow; a 2006 appraisal had valued restrictions on three estate buildings at $750,000, with approximately $350,000 attributed to the Rand House alone. Commissioners discussed whether to fund an updated appraisal through Community Preservation Act money, with a member planning to consult a selectman on next steps, as the house continues to deteriorate on the market.
