Little League Helps Shape New Birchard Clark Park Playground
The Community Preservation Commission reviewed a roughly $875,000 playground design for Birchard Clark Park on Oct. 5, a project shaped with input from Weston Little League, WCCA and the Recreation Commission through the Birchard Clark Park Playground Committee.
WESTON --
TOWN
The Community Preservation Commission met Oct. 5 to review design and cost details for a new playground at Birchard Clark Park. Commission members said design support has come from the CPC, the Finance Committee, the Recreation Commission and Weston Little League, with newer input from the Birchard Clark Park Playground Committee formed in June. That committee includes Weston Little League, WCCA, the Recreation Commission and representatives of environmental and children's education interests.
The presented design centers on a single custom structure intended to serve children ages 5 to 12 as well as younger kids, with features including a playhouse, smaller slides, an accessible spinner, swings including an infant swing and an accessible swing, and an adult outdoor fitness structure outside the main play area. A zip line element was also discussed, with commission members debating its safety, square footage and roughly $10,000 equipment cost.
The cost summary presented put site work at $318,245 and playground structures at $340,650, with general conditions, contractor overhead and contingency bringing the total request to $836,796, rounded to an $875,000 ask. Commission members also raised questions about restroom access at the park, which officials said is being discussed separately at the Recreation Commission, and about maintenance costs, which presenters said should be minimal given the use of engineered wood fiber and rubber surfacing rather than traditional wood chips.
